Teaching & Facilitation
Next to writing, teaching and facilitation are my great loves. I’ve honed these skills in diverse, mostly non-traditional settings. My first experience with teaching was through my work with The Youthbridge Initiative where I developed and taught curriculum centered on human rights and conflict transformation to teenage survivors of the Balkan War. During my MFA studies, I taught in a more traditional university setting as both a Teaching Assistant and an Instructor for Playwriting, Directing, and Introduction to Theater courses.
Post MFA, I taught playwriting to kids aged 9-18 at the Springer Opera House’s amazing summer program and continued my work in the Balkans through 2008. After joining the staff of Austin Seminary in 2009, my teaching and facilitation expanded into the spiritual and religious space, and my work founding and coordinating both The AYAVA House community and The 787 Collective allowed me consistent opportunities to facilitate learning and group work for young adults, pastors, and congregations. I’m fluent in Marshall Rosenberg’s Nonviolent Communication model, trained in the Make Good facilitation process from Rooted Good, and often utilize breath work and other somatic and movement-based processes to help individuals center and groups connect as part of my facilitation approach. Since moving back to my native Alabama in 2022, I’m proud to be serving in the Huntsville City School system, which provided me with so many wonderful learning opportunities as a young learner. I’m proudly serving this year on the faculty of Columbia High School as a teacher of English Language Arts.
